Ok, we’ve all been there (yes, even me, the professional interior designer)! We have a space that we have put together “for right now” just to get it done, until the kids are older, etc. with the hopes of making it totally awesome later….when we have more time….. Fast forward to months/years later and there it is, looking EXACTLY as it did, no change. You want to do something cool, fun, exciting but you just don’t know where to start. Now what? The answer is to approach it like a Ninja….let me explain.
This is going to be a “quick hit” project…..get in, get out and get done! Here is how, Ninja style:
1. Assess the situation. Pick one room to transform. The one that is bothering you the most. If they are all on your nerves, then pick the room you spend the most time in. It will give you an instant boost every time you are there!
2. Be Observant. Do you have some things lying around that you have been meaning to use somewhere?
This room I designed for a client. She had these beautiful parasols in her closet. She always loved them but didn’t know what to do with them. I hung them above the bed in the Guest Bedroom and it was an awesome and fun way to display them!
If you have a collection, display it all together. It makes a stronger statement. Check out this cool way to display a shell collection…
3. Be Fearless. Don’t be so worried about making a mistake. If you want color, add color! This can be done several ways. Try painting an accent wall. Get some of those little testers and try out the color before you commit BUT only pick two. Look at it in both daytime and nighttime. Don’t get bogged down in a million choices. If you hate it, it can be repainted, no one has died, and the world has not ended, no biggie.
If you can’t paint a wall, you can always paint large canvases or picture frames and hang them up. This is an easy and quick way to liven things up a bit. I just painted this large vertical stripe in my office and added painted frames and art for an interesting effect.
Add colorful pillows. There are so many great styles and colors to choose from out there! Mix and match patterns but don’t get schizophrenic. Stick to no more than three colors and patterns. Neutrals like Black and White can set off well against any color.
4. Be Agile. You know what you like, don’t over think it. Don’t get stuck in a world of indecision….this is the time to trust your instincts, Ninja style, and go for it! XO PD.
